Overview
Snowdrops rank among the first flowers of the year in most temperate gardens, opening nodding white bells in late winter while the soil is still cold. They arise from small bulbs, return unaided each spring, and spread by degrees into drifts beneath trees and along paths. Left undisturbed for a few years, a colony knits into a sheet of white before the rest of the garden breaks dormancy.
A member of the amaryllis family, the species performs best in the cool, moist half-shade cast by deciduous trees, since it completes its cycle before the canopy closes. It proves short-lived where summers turn hot, a limit tied directly to heat, so it favors cold-winter gardens over warm ones. Once matched to a suitable site, it needs almost no intervention.
One caveat governs where it belongs. Every part of the plant is toxic, the bulb most concentrated of all. The species is both handsome and durable, but it warrants a position out of reach of pets or small children inclined to dig and eat the bulbs.

Snowdrops present few problems, and those that arise localize either in the bulb or manifest as a gradual decline of the whole clump. Compare the two signs below against the planting and intervene while recovery remains possible.
Foliage wilts and the bulbs turn soft and hollow
The narcissus bulb fly is responsible, its larvae boring in and consuming the bulb from within. Lift a declining plant and inspect for a fat cream-colored maggot occupying the hollowed core. Excavate and destroy every infested bulb to break the cycle, and relocate the planting rather than replanting the same ground.

Colonies weaken and flower less from year to year
Excess heat is the primary driver, as the species grows short-lived once sited south of zone 7, and dry or poorly drained ground compounds the decline. Relocate the planting to cool part shade beneath deciduous trees and amend with organic matter so the soil retains spring moisture.

Toxicity
The species is toxic and should be handled accordingly. Every part contains the alkaloids lycorine and galantamine, with the bulb holding the highest concentration. Ingestion induces drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea, and a large dose, particularly of a bulb, can progress to tremors and cardiac disturbance. No part is edible, so keep the bulbs well away from pets, livestock, and children.

Cats Toxic
A cat that browses the foliage typically drools and vomits within a few hours. The bulb poses the greater hazard, and a cat that unearths and consumes one may proceed to tremors and an irregular heartbeat.
Dogs Toxic
Dogs are the animals most prone to excavating and chewing a bulb, which triggers profuse drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. A substantial mouthful can advance to trembling and a rapid or irregular pulse.
Horses Toxic
The same alkaloids affect horses markedly. Grazing the leaves or bulbs produces drooling, colicky abdominal pain, and loose manure, and a large dose can leave a horse weak and trembling.
Rabbits Toxic
Rabbits should be given no part of a snowdrop. Even a small quantity of leaf or bulb disturbs the gut and can leave a rabbit drooling, off its feed, and lethargic.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, sheep, and goats that access a stand of snowdrops may drool, scour, and refuse feed. Heavier grazing risks tremors and cardiac instability, so exclude the bulbs from pasture with fencing.
Birds Toxic
Poultry and other birds are likewise unsafe around snowdrops. The lycorine present throughout can leave a bird subdued, off feed, and regurgitating its crop, with the bulb producing the severest effects.
People Caution
No part of the plant is edible. Children occasionally mistake the bulbs for onions, and ingestion brings drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea, so store the bulbs out of reach and wash the hands after planting.
