Overview
Field pea is the working cousin of the garden pea, the identical species raised for its vines rather than its sweet pods. Vines collapse and decay against the soil
The stem of a field pea is long and low in structural fiber, which is why a pure stand tends to lodge: with nothing to bear its weight, the canopy folds onto the ground, traps moisture, and the bottom growth yellows and rots.
