The strawflower, or golden everlasting, reveals its defining trait on contact: the showy structures are not petals but stiff, papery bracts that crackle to the touch and retain pigment for months after cutting. A member of the daisy family native to Australia, the species performs across most garden sites as a warm-season annual.
