Overview
Senecio is a genus of blue-green succulents in the family Asteraceae, cultivated for chalky, glaucous foliage rather than the small flowers it produces in summer. The chalkstick species hold upright, finger-shaped leaves finished with a fine powdery bloom over blue-green tissue. Much of the succulent group has been reassigned to the segregate genus Curio, yet horticultural trade still lists these plants as Senecio.
The traits that make these plants tolerant of neglect also explain their main weakness. Water banked in the swollen leaves buffers them through dry spells, so a missed watering does little harm, but the same fleshy tissue rots quickly when the medium stays saturated. Managed like a cactus rather than a foliage houseplant, kept on the dry side, a specimen persists for years.
A single caution governs the whole genus. Senecio tissue contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds that inflict cumulative hepatic damage, alongside a sap that irritates skin, which places the plant firmly out of reach of pets, livestock, and children.
Care
The short version: site it in the strongest light available, grow it in a sharply draining gritty medium, and irrigate only after the substrate has dried through completely.
Light
Provide full sun outdoors or the brightest available window indoors. Under insufficient light the internodes elongate and the stems lean toward the source, a response called etiolation, so supplement with a grow light where a bright position is unavailable.
Water
Irrigate only once the substrate is fully dry and the leaves begin to pucker slightly, an interval that generally runs every 10 to 21 days. Because the fleshy tissue is far more prone to rot than to drought stress, reduce watering markedly through winter dormancy.
Soil
Grow it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix so that water clears the root zone quickly and rot has no opening. A substrate pH of 6.0 to 7.0 suits it, and adequate drainage matters more to survival than the precise blend.
Temperature
The comfortable range sits between 50°F to 77°F (10°C to 25°C). The plant has no frost tolerance, so return it indoors or shelter it well ahead of freezing conditions.
Humidity
Low ambient humidity is preferred, and the record sets no target percentage. Dry indoor air suits the plant, while damp, stagnant conditions raise the risk of rot in the fleshy tissue.
Feeding
Fertilize sparingly across spring and summer, the period of active growth. A diluted balanced or low-nitrogen cactus feed applied once in the season meets its modest demand, and feeding should cease entirely over winter.
Pruning
Structural pruning is minimal. Pinch or shorten leggy and overgrown stems in spring, remove dead or shriveled growth, and root the detached tip cuttings to raise additional plants.
Repotting
Repot every 2 to 3 years, or sooner where roots crowd the container. Roots emerging from the drainage holes, a substrate that dries almost immediately after watering, and stalled growth together indicate the plant has become rootbound.

Mature height reaches 10 to 18 inches (25 to 45 cm) with a spread of 18 to 35 inches (45 to 90 cm). Allow a spreading clump room to develop laterally, or position it high so the stems cascade over the rim.
Troubleshooting
The disorders of these succulents nearly all reduce to two variables, moisture and light. Excess moisture drives root and stem rot, the one failure that proves fatal, whereas light deficits and sun damage typically spare the plant while degrading its appearance. Diagnose from the symptoms below and intervene early.
Soft, water-soaked stems blackening at the base
Collapsed, translucent, blackening tissue at the stem base indicates root and stem rot, the principal cause of death in chalkstick succulents and a direct result of excess moisture or a medium that retains it. Withhold water immediately, excise the affected tissue back to firm, healthy growth, and allow the cuttings to callus before setting them into dry gritty mix. Resume irrigation only after the substrate has dried through.

Elongated stems with pale, widely spaced leaves
Extended internodes and stems oriented toward the window are the signature of etiolation, a growth response to inadequate light. Relocate the plant to a brighter position, increasing exposure over a week or two so the acclimating tissue does not scorch. The removed tips root readily and can be grown on as new plants.

Puckered, softened leaves on fully dry substrate
Wrinkled, yielding leaves over long-dry substrate signal that water reserves in the tissue have been depleted. Water thoroughly until the excess drains from the pot, then reinstate the standard dry-down interval. Turgor recovers and the leaves refill within a day or two.

Bleached, scorched patches on sun-exposed leaves

Toxicity
Regard this genus as one to keep beyond reach. Every part contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which cause slow, progressive liver injury, and the sap irritates skin and eyes on contact. Cats Toxic
In cats, chewing the leaves or stems commonly induces vomiting and hypersalivation, with diarrhea and lethargy developing alongside. The sap irritates the oral mucosa, and the pyrrolizidine alkaloids contribute progressive, cumulative hepatic injury with repeated exposure.
Dogs Toxic
A dog that ingests the plant typically drools, vomits, and loses appetite, often with diarrhea and reduced energy. Repeated ingestion carries the greater hazard, as the hepatotoxic alkaloids accumulate with each dose.
Horses Toxic
Horses are particularly susceptible. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids produce slow, irreversible liver damage that may remain subclinical until weight loss, dullness, and behavioral change emerge weeks or months later.
Rabbits Toxic
Rabbits should be denied access entirely. The same hepatotoxic alkaloids act on them, and the irritant sap renders the foliage unsuitable for browsing.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, goats, and sheep can accumulate enough alkaloid over time to develop serious hepatic disease. Grazing stock face the highest exposure where the plants naturalize into open ground.
Birds Toxic
Birds should be kept from the plant. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids impose the same hepatic risk, so no bird should be allowed to consume the leaves or sap.

Kew's Plants of the World Online recognizes the segregate genus Curio for numerous succulent senecios, including the chalkstick group. The trade continues to label them Senecio, so the two names denote the same plants in practice.
A drought-hardy succulent is therefore safe around pets.
Physiological hardiness bears no relation to toxicity. The ASPCA classifies succulent Senecio and Curio as toxic to cats and dogs, producing vomiting and lethargy, which warrants keeping the plants beyond an animal's reach.
