Overview
The wax plant owes its common name to thick, glossy leaves whose cuticle is heavy enough to feel almost artificial. Botanically it is a climbing epiphyte of the Apocynaceae, native to a corridor of Asia running from southern China to Laos and eastward to Taiwan and Japan, where it ascends host trees rather than rooting in soil. Under cultivation indoors it behaves as an easy, long-lived vine, trailing from a shelf or ascending a modest trellis.
The floral display is the reason most growers keep it. On mature specimens the plant produces rounded umbels of star-shaped, waxy flowers with the finish of carved porcelain, frequently fragrant and exuding a bead of nectar. Reaching that stage requires patience, because a juvenile plant generally needs 2 to 3 years to attain flowering maturity.
Cultivation reduces to two governing factors: adequate light, and restraint at the watering can. Because the semi-succulent leaves function as a water reserve, the plant withstands a lapsed watering far better than a waterlogged root zone, where oxygen is excluded. Satisfy light and drainage and the wax plant demands little else.
Care

Grow the wax plant in bright indirect light, ideally immediately beside a window that supplies a few hours of direct morning sun, since that intensity funds bud initiation. It persists in partial shade, but low light suppresses flowering and degrades the variegation of the patterned cultivars.
Water
Irrigate freely through spring and fall, then allow the top third to half of the mix to dry before the next application. Reduce watering sharply in winter. Overwatering is the leading cause of death in this plant, because saturated media excludes oxygen from the roots, so err toward waiting.
Soil
Use a loose, fast-draining medium rich in organic matter, for instance one part potting soil, one part orchid bark, and one part perlite. The species tolerates a pH span of 6.0 to 8.0, but it will not endure a medium that retains water around the roots.
Temperature
Maintain it within 45°F to 75°F (7°C to 24°C), treating the lower figure as a hard limit rather than a target, because this is a tropical species with no cold tolerance. Steady indoor warmth, away from cold drafts and chilled window glass, suits it best.
Humidity

Remove the bare flower stalks once the blooms have faded.
Those bare stalks, correctly the spurs or peduncles, are the perennial structures from which the next flowers arise. Leave them intact and the plant reflowers on the same spur year after year, whereas removing them forfeits the coming flush.
