Overview
Among backyard fruit trees, the fig returns a great deal for little input. It is a deciduous member of the Moraceae, the mulberry family, carrying broad lobed leaves, and its cultivation around the Mediterranean reaches back thousands of years. The species is forgiving and fast, advancing from a rooted cutting to a cropping tree within a few seasons because it fruits on new wood.
The defining trait of the home fig is parthenocarpy: the common types set fruit without pollination, so a lone tree crops heavily with no pollinator involved. Growth is fast and large, reaching 10 to 30 feet across in open ground, though container culture restricts the root run and holds a tree to patio scale.
The one caveat is the latex. A severed leaf or stem releases a milky, irritant sap that stings skin and troubles animals, a chemical defense the plant carries throughout its vegetative parts. The ripe fruit itself is safe to eat, so management reduces to gloves at pruning and siting the tree beyond a dog's reach.
Care
The short version: establish a fig in full sun and rich, well-drained soil, supply deep water through the season while avoiding saturated ground, prune during winter dormancy, and fertilize from spring into early summer.
Light
A fig performs best in full sun, because high light drives the sugars that sweeten the crop and keeps the canopy dry enough to resist disease. Partial shade is tolerated, but reduced photosynthesis yields a smaller crop that ripens later.
Water
Supply deep, regular water through the growing and fruiting season, since steady soil moisture is what allows the fruit to size and stay attached rather than abort. The species will not tolerate saturated ground, so allow the top inch or so to dry between irrigations, and apply mulch to buffer soil moisture and limit the fruit drop that follows uneven watering.
Soil
Grow figs in rich, well-drained loam that holds moisture without waterlogging. The optimum pH falls between 6.0 to 7.0, and because the species does poorly on alkaline ground, incorporate organic matter at planting to build structure and buffer the root zone.
Temperature
Figs are thermophilic, growing best between 50°F and 95°F (10°C to 35°C), which is why they crop most reliably in mild zones. Where winters run colder, the top growth can die to the ground while the root system survives and regenerates.
Humidity
Ambient outdoor air near 40% to 60% meets a fig's needs, so atmospheric humidity is rarely the limiting factor. Canopy airflow matters far more, because still, humid conditions among crowded leaves favor the rust fungus.
Feeding
Fertilize from spring through midsummer, roughly April to July, using a balanced granular product such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10. Withholding feed by late summer prevents a flush of soft, frost-tender growth, and lowering the rate in colder zones firms the wood and improves cold hardiness.
Pruning
Prune during late winter dormancy, when the absence of leaves exposes the framework and cuts heal cleanly. Remove dead wood and thin to an open, bushy habit, taking up to a third or half of the prior season's growth to stimulate the branching that carries the crop, and avoid leaving stubs that invite dieback. Because fruit forms on new wood, restrain heavy cuts that would remove the developing crop.
Repotting
Renew a container fig every 2 to 3 years, refreshing the medium and root-pruning to relieve congestion. The signals are roots circling the pot or escaping the drainage holes, and a medium that dries almost immediately after watering, both indications the roots have outrun the container.

In open ground a fig grows fast and large, from 10 to 30 feet (3 to 9 m) tall and roughly as wide, so allow that radius from structures and neighboring trees. Container culture is the practical way to keep a tree smaller where space is short.

A fig is seldom a demanding tree, and its problems concentrate at three sites: the roots, the foliage, and the ripening fruit. Reading the early signs matters, because most fixes come down to sanitation that interrupts the pest or pathogen before it establishes. Identify the symptom below, then trace it to its cause.
Root galls accompanied by stunted, wilting top growth
Stunting, wilting, and yellowing paired with rounded swellings on lifted roots indicate root-knot nematodes, soil-dwelling parasites that are most damaging in sandy soils with a prior infestation. No chemical cure exists once they colonize the roots, so the response is cultural: remove and destroy the worst plants, replant with clean stock in fresh, nematode-free soil, and mulch heavily to sustain the vigor of the remaining roots.

Foliar spotting with premature defoliation late in the season
Yellow-brown spots with reddish-brown pustules on the lower leaf surface are the diagnostic of fig rust, caused by the fungus Cerotelium fici. It is rarely lethal, though a severe year can defoliate the canopy prematurely. Fall sanitation that removes the spore-bearing fallen leaves, canopy thinning that improves airflow, and a labeled fungicide reserved for recurring epidemics together break the disease cycle.

Ripening figs that ooze and give off a fermented odor
Fermenting, oozing fruit with a sour or alcoholic odor is souring, which develops when yeasts and other organisms are vectored by insects entering through the open eye, or ostiole, at the base of the fruit. Prompt harvest at ripeness and removal of spoiled fruit limit the inoculum, while planting a closed- or tight-eye cultivar such as Celeste denies the insects their entry point in the first place.

Toxicity
The ripe syconium is edible, but the vegetative tissue is not. Broken leaves and stems exude a milky latex carrying ficin, a proteolytic enzyme, and psoralens, and together these irritate the mouth, gut, and skin. Keep animals from browsing the foliage, and prune in gloves and long sleeves, because psoralens make the skin photoreactive and the sap can blister in sunlight.

Ripe figs are safe to eat. The exception is the latex of leaves and stems, which can burn skin and, under sunlight, progress to a blistering phototoxic rash, so prune in gloves and long sleeves.
Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can irritate skin and, combined with sunlight, cause photodermatitis.

Varieties
Of the hundreds of named fig cultivars, a handful are worth singling out for the traits a grower actually selects on: sweetness, cropping reliability, and cold tolerance. The following are the references most often planted.
Celeste
Celeste is a small, sweet fig whose closed eye excludes the souring organisms, and it carries better cold tolerance than most common types.
Brown Turkey
Brown Turkey is a vigorous, reliable cultivar bearing large fruit throughout the Southeast, and it also circulates under the synonym Texas Everbearing.
Chicago Hardy
Chicago Hardy ranks among the most cold-tolerant figs available, its root system surviving hard freezes and regenerating from the base when the top is killed.

Myths
Fruit set in figs always depends on pollination by the fig wasp.
Common home-garden figs are parthenocarpic and set fruit without any pollination at all. Only Smyrna, San Pedro, and caprifig types depend on the fig wasp, an insect that cannot survive across most of the US in any case. A common type will fruit on its own.
Because the plant poisons pets, the fruit is also unsafe.
The ripe fruit is edible and safe for people. The hazard is the irritant milky latex of the leaves and stems, a separate tissue entirely from the harvested fruit.
