Overview
Cosmos bipinnatus is a fast-growing annual native to Mexico that completes its whole cycle, from seed to a haze of daisy-like flowers, in a single season. The blooms come in pink, white, and deep magenta, carried above finely divided, fern-like foliage. Because it self-seeds, a single sowing tends to persist in the same ground from year to year.
Its defining trait is a low nutrient demand, and this is where most growers go wrong. Cosmos flowers best in lean, dry soil, since high fertility and surplus nitrogen drive vegetative growth at the direct expense of flower production. Mature height runs from 2 to 4 feet, and the taller forms lodge and sprawl without support, a function of soft stems carrying a tall load.
