Overview

The corn plant holds its place indoors because it tolerates conditions that defeat fussier species. Growth proceeds from a thick, woody cane that carries arching, strappy leaves, and the broad central yellow stripe of the common 'Massangeana' is the form most growers recognize. As a species native to tropical Africa, it adapts to ordinary interior light and keeps an upright, columnar habit over many years.

Its slow growth rate explains much of its appeal as a houseplant. A young cane stands near 3 feet, and with sufficient time and vertical space it exceeds head height, but the rate stays measured throughout. Because it adds little mass each year, the root system rarely fills the pot quickly, which is why repotting is infrequent.

The plant's defining weakness is water quality. Dracaena fragrans is highly sensitive to fluoride and soluble salts, both of which it cannot exclude or shed, so they accumulate in the leaf tissue and scorch the tips. Supplying filtered water or rainwater, holding it warm, and shielding it from cold drafts addresses nearly every cultural problem it presents.

Care

The short version: site it in bright indirect light, which it prefers though it endures low light, and water with fluoride-free water once the top of the soil dries. Hold it above 50°F (10°C), feed monthly across spring and summer, and routine care stays minimal.

Light

Site corn plants in bright indirect light, set back from a hot window so direct rays do not strike the foliage. They tolerate medium and even low light, but reduced light slows photosynthesis, which narrows the leaves and checks growth. Direct sun scorches the foliage and should be avoided.

Water

Water once the top of the soil dries, holding the medium evenly moist through spring and summer and reducing it from fall to late winter while never allowing it to dry out completely. Water quality matters most, because the plant is highly sensitive to fluoride and salts, so apply distilled, filtered, or rainwater and flush the pot periodically to leach accumulated salts. Cold tap water should be avoided.

Soil

Grow it in a loamy, peaty, well-drained potting mix in a container with drainage holes so excess water clears the root zone. Maintain a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 6.5, and exclude perlite and superphosphate, since both introduce the fluoride this species cannot tolerate.

Temperature

Hold the plant between 50°F and 81°F (10°C to 27°C) and never below 50°F, the threshold at which chilling injury begins. Cold drafts and contact with chilly glass damage leaf tissue, so relocate it indoors well before fall nights turn cold.

Humidity

Average household humidity near 30% to 40% meets its needs. When indoor air falls below that range, particularly in winter, supplemental humidity reduces the tip browning that dry air aggravates.

Feeding

Feed monthly through spring and summer with a liquid foliage houseplant fertilizer during active growth, and withhold feed in the colder months as growth slows. Avoid any fertilizer high in fluoride or superphosphate, which adds the element responsible for leaf-tip burn.

Pruning

As a slow grower it requires repotting only every 1 to 2 years, or when clearly crowded. The signs to act on are roots circling the pot or emerging from the drainage holes, water passing straight through with little uptake, or growth that stalls despite sound care.

A rotting stem base with soft, browned roots and odor

This is root or soft rot, the result of excess water or a medium that will not drain. The roots turn soft and brown and the lower leaves collapse, so the plant cannot take up water even though the soil is wet. Stop watering, unpot it, excise every soft root, and repot into fresh fast-draining mix in a container with drainage holes. Cats Moderate

The saponins affect cats most severely. The clinical signs include drooling, anorexia, and vomiting that may contain flecks of blood, commonly accompanied by a flat, depressed demeanor. Dilated pupils occur in cats but not in dogs.

Dogs Moderate

A dog that chews the leaves tends to drool, refuse food, and vomit, occasionally with a trace of blood. Many also become quiet and subdued for a period while the irritation resolves.

Horses Moderate

The ASPCA lists the plant as toxic to horses through the same saponins. A horse that reaches the foliage can be expected to drool, lose its appetite, and develop digestive upset.

Rabbits Caution

Saponins disturb a rabbit's digestive tract, so the leaves should be kept out of reach entirely. No quantity is safe to ingest, and any chewing warrants veterinary advice.

Livestock Caution

Grazing animals such as goats and sheep ingest the same saponins and develop digestive upset, so the plant is best kept where they cannot reach it at all.

Birds Caution

A bird that pecks the foliage may ingest the saponins, so it should be kept well away from the plant. Any chewing is reason to consult an avian veterinarian.

People Minimal

People are essentially safe around the plant. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, and a child who bites a leaf may experience a brief stomach upset, but it does not pose a serious poisoning risk.

Varieties

Several cultivars carry the corn plant name, and they separate chiefly by leaf variegation, which also governs how fluoride injury presents on each. The following are the forms encountered most.

'Massangeana' (corn plant / mass cane)

This is the most common form, distinguished by broad evergreen leaves split by a wide central yellow stripe, and it is also the cultivar on which fluoride injury presents as tan dead areas edged in bright yellow along the leaf margin.

'Lemon Lime'

It bears sword-shaped leaves up to about 2 feet long that combine cream, greenish-yellow, and lime stripes, and it belongs to the Deremensis Group of D. fragrans.

'Janet Craig'

A dark green cultivar of the Deremensis Group, it expresses fluoride trouble as yellow or dead leaf tips rather than as margin burn.

'Warneckii'

A white-striped form within the Deremensis Group, it shows fluoride damage as long tan to dark brown streaks running through the pale stripes.

How to propagate

Corn plants propagate readily from vegetative material, so the leggy canes removed during pruning serve directly as the stock for new plants.

Myth

Dracaena fragrans removes a meaningful share of VOCs from indoor air.

Reality

A 2020 review of chamber studies by Cummings and Waring concluded that potted plants do not improve indoor air quality at any realistic density. The clean air delivery rate of a single plant is so low that matching the effect of ordinary building ventilation would require somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter. Grow it for enjoyment, not as an air filter.

Myth

Necrotic dracaena leaf tips reflect the calcium-oxalate injury characteristic of aroids.

Reality

Dracaena fragrans is an Asparagaceae species whose toxic principle is saponins, distinct from the calcium oxalate that aroids carry. Brown tips on this plant trace to fluoride and salt sensitivity or dry air, not oxalate irritation, so the remedy lies in water quality rather than any measure directed at oxalate.
