Its annual cycle is governed by the relationship between spear and fern. Establishing each new bed from clean crowns on fresh ground, never in old asparagus soil, avoids the carryover inoculum that drives reinfection.

The harvested spears are a safe, routine vegetable. The red berries are the exception, since their saponins can cause stomach upset, so they should not be eaten and should be kept from small children.

Myths
White asparagus is a different plant from the green kind.
Both are the same plant, Asparagus officinalis, separated only by culture. Growers mound soil over the emerging spears to exclude light, a practice called blanching. Deprived of sunlight, the spear cannot synthesize chlorophyll, so it stays white.
Female plants are better because they make berries.
The opposite holds in yield terms. Male plants out-produce females because energy that females commit to flowering, seed, and berries goes instead into spear production. That allocation is why all-male hybrids are the standard choice, and it also prevents the volunteer seedlings that scattered berries would establish.
You can cut spears heavily the first year after planting.
Newly set crowns must first build their reserves. Skip the harvest for the first season or two, then limit cutting to a light take in year 2 or 3. Allowing the ferns to mature is what accumulates the crown energy that sustains productive cropping across the bed's two-decade lifespan.
