Nurseries join a weeping scion to the top of an upright standard rootstock, commonly at 4 to 6 feet, which is why the branches cascade from that fixed height. That graft explains a key management point: any shoot arising below the union carries rootstock genetics and grows upright, so it must be removed to preserve the form.

Vigor is high, and given space the tree reaches 15 to 40 feet (4.6 to 12 m) with a comparable spread. It is broadly cold-hardy and undemanding once its root system is established. As a Prunus, though, its foliage accumulates cyanogenic glycosides, which makes siting relative to grazing animals a genuine horticultural consideration.

Varieties

The named weeping cherries diverge mainly in flower color, in whether the corolla is single or double, and in mature stature. The following cultivars are the ones most worth distinguishing.
