Serviceberry works as a small tree or large shrub that performs across all four seasons. Bloom comes first, with white flowers opening in early spring ahead of most canopy trees, followed by blue-purple pomes ripening in June and foliage that colors red and orange in autumn. Its many common names, among them juneberry, shadbush, and saskatoon, all refer to this single adaptable native.

Taxonomically it sits in Rosaceae with apples and pears, and that kinship shows in its fruit. The ripe pomes eat much like a blueberry, palatable fresh or cooked into preserves, though birds compete heavily for the crop. Growers can train it to a single trunk or allow root suckers to build a multi-stem form, since the species readily produces suckers from the base.

Few small trees demand so little of a site. Serviceberry performs in full sun through full shade, withstands winter cold to zone 4, and grows in loam, sand, or clay provided drainage is adequate. Steady moisture during establishment sets it up for a long, productive life.

Amelanchier alnifolia (saskatoon/western serviceberry)

A western North American native grown commercially in Canada as a superfruit for its large, sweet, juicy berries.

Amelanchier arborea (downy serviceberry)

How to propagate

Serviceberry can be increased by several methods, and the appropriate choice depends on whether cultivar fidelity or simply more plants is the objective.
