Overview

Leyland cypress is the default choice wherever a screen is needed quickly. It is a fast-growing evergreen, an intergeneric hybrid of Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress that adds several feet of height per year and fills into a dense, feathery column. That growth rate is its principal virtue, and it is also the origin of most of its cultural problems.

The complication is that this is a short-lived, disease-prone tree, and the conventional planting scheme aggravates its weaknesses. Installed as a tight single-species row, the trees compete, canopy airflow collapses, and canker and root rot establish. Given genuine spacing, an individual specimen persists far longer than a crowded, neglected screen.

Managed as a proper landscape tree rather than a stopgap, it performs well. It tolerates a broad range of soils, accepts shearing into a formal outline, and demands little maintenance once established. Spacing, drainage, and reliable irrigation during dry spells are the variables that decide whether the screen thrives or thins.

Care
