Overview
Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis, is the cool-season turfgrass most people have in mind when they think of a classic northern lawn. It builds a fine, dense turf in a deep green shading toward blue, and it propagates laterally by underground rhizomes that let a stand recolonize scuffs and bare ground on its own. Despite the common name the species is not native to North America; it originated in Europe and northern Asia and was introduced by early colonists, after which it became the standard for cool-region lawns.
The horticultural signature of the grass is that self-repairing habit. Unlike bunch grasses, which remain in discrete clumps, the rhizomatous growth of bluegrass spreads sideways and re-knits worn turf, which accounts for its durability on lawns and playing fields under real foot traffic. The counterweight is establishment time, because it is slow from seed and commonly takes a full season or two to reach full density.
Its requirements are sun and adequate cool-season moisture. In hot, dry summers the turf browns and enters dormancy, appearing dead while the crowns remain alive below the canopy, then resumes growth once rainfall and cooler nights return. Supplied with the light and water the species needs, it yields one of the most durable and best-looking turfs available in northern regions.

The species requires full sun and extends only to part shade at the margin. In genuine shade it thins and weakens and becomes prone to powdery mildew, so shaded ground is better assigned to a fine fescue.
Water
During active growth it needs about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) of water weekly, applied deeply rather than as light daily amounts, since deep irrigation supports the crown. In hot, dry conditions it browns and goes dormant, but the crowns persist and the stand recovers when cool, moist weather returns.
Soil
It performs best in fertile, well-drained loam at a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Heavy, poorly drained soil retains moisture that favors disease, so drainage matters more than high fertility.
Temperature
As a cool-season grass it operates across roughly -29°F to 75°F (-34°C to 24°C). It withstands severe northern winters and greens up early, but growth slows as high-summer heat exceeds its optimum.

Purple-brown leaf lesions advancing to crown and root rot
This is the leaf spot and melting-out complex, driven by Drechslera and Bipolaris fungi that gain ground in cool, wet spring weather, and made worse by close mowing and heavy early nitrogen. The leaf phase presents as dark purplish-brown spots with tan centers; the melting-out phase then advances into the crowns and roots, rotting them and thinning the stand into open patches. Because stress and leaf wetness fuel the progression, raising the mowing height, easing spring nitrogen, and improving drainage and airflow all slow it.
Fix:

Loose dead patches over severed root systems
Turf that rolls back like carpet has lost its anchoring roots to feeding below the surface. The primary agents are white grubs, the C-shaped larvae of Japanese beetles, chafers, and June beetles, with billbug larvae tunneling stems and crowns as a secondary cause. Skunks, birds, and raccoons digging in the lawn are a useful indirect sign, since they are foraging for those grubs. Inspecting the root zone confirms population levels, after which a labeled grub insecticide watered in at the correct timing, plus sustained irrigation so the stand can outgrow minor loss, resolves it.

To hold color, supply 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) of water weekly; to allow dormancy, water lightly every 2 to 3 weeks so the crowns keep enough moisture to green up once cooler, wetter conditions return.

These coin-sized patches are dollar spot, caused by the fungus Clarireedia jacksonii, which advances in warm, humid weather and is aggravated by low nitrogen. On the individual blade you will find light-tan lesions bordered in reddish brown, and on dew-covered mornings a white cobwebby mycelium may be visible. Because nitrogen deficiency drives the disease, holding fertility steady and moderate, irrigating early so foliage dries by midday, and applying a labeled fungicide only when damage spreads together check it.

Toxicity
For animal-keeping households the verdict is reassuring: Kentucky bluegrass is not poisonous. It is a non-toxic lawn and forage grass, safe for cats, dogs, and grazing livestock, and it does not appear on the ASPCA's toxic-plant lists. The single qualification is the pollen released by an unmown, flowering stand, which can provoke hay fever in susceptible people and pets.

Cats Safe
The species poses no toxic risk to cats. Where a cat vomits after eating a large mouthful, the cause is mechanical stomach irritation from the fibrous blades rather than any poison.

Dogs may chew or lie on the turf with no toxic consequence. The one variable to note is grass pollen, which can provoke itchy, watery hay-fever signs in a sensitive individual.

Regarded as a valued pasture species, it is grazed by horses freely and without adverse effect.

Varieties

A widely grown improved turf-type cultivar valued for its very dark blue-green color and a low, dense, compact habit that tolerates close mowing well.
Kentucky bluegrass blends

Hybrid (Texas × Kentucky) bluegrasses
Interspecific crosses with Texas bluegrass that retain color and sustain summer growth through heat and drought far better than pure Kentucky bluegrass.
