Overview
Bermuda grass is a warm-season turf grass that endures heat, drought, and heavy use better than nearly any competing lawn species. Its growth habit is the reason: it advances low and fast, weaving creeping stems above and below the soil into a dense, self-repairing mat. Through the warmer zones it serves as the default turf for home lawns, sports fields, and golf surfaces.
That same vigor sets the trade-off. The plant travels sideways on stolons and rhizomes and will colonize flower beds and a neighbor's yard wherever no barrier interrupts it, which is why several regions list it as invasive. It also requires full sun, declining quickly in shade because it cannot photosynthesize enough under a canopy, so it is the wrong choice for a yard under heavy tree cover.
Where conditions suit it, bermuda grass is undemanding. Provide sun, mow low and often, and water deeply but occasionally, and it holds density through the hardest part of summer. It browns and enters dormancy over winter, then resumes growth on its own as warmth returns.
Care
The short version: full sun, mowed low and often, watered deeply but infrequently, and fed nitrogen steadily through the growing season. It performs on heat and traffic but declines in shade, where it cannot capture enough light.
Light
Bermuda grass requires full sun and tolerates no meaningful shade, because it cannot sustain its dense growth without high light. A stand beneath trees or against a building, receiving less than 6 hours of direct light, thins and fails, so reserve it for the open, sunny areas of the yard.
Water
Once established it is very drought tolerant, thanks to a deep root system, so water deeply and infrequently rather than with shallow daily sprinkling that keeps roots near the surface. About 1 inch (2.5 cm) a week during active growth maintains color. Let it dry between waterings, and do not be alarmed if it browns in a dry spell, since it recovers.
Soil
It is undemanding about soil texture, accepting clay, loam, sand, shallow rocky ground, and high organic matter alike, provided the soil drains well so roots are not waterlogged. Its pH tolerance is broad, from 5.0 to 8.5, which spans most yards.
Temperature
This is a heat-adapted grass, comfortable across roughly 10°F to 104°F (-12°C to 40°C). It grows hardest in summer warmth and enters dormancy in cold, with winterkill a risk below about 10°F (-12°C) where freezing damages the crowns.
Humidity
Ambient outdoor humidity is sufficient, so no level needs managing. The grass performs in both humid and dry climates as long as its light and water requirements are met.
Feeding
Feed with a nitrogen-based turf fertilizer through the growing season, from late spring into summer when growth is active and demand is highest. Target about 3 to 7 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft a year, divided across several applications, and never exceed 1 lb per 1000 sq ft in a single feeding.
Pruning
Mowing is the form pruning takes here. Cut low, to about 0.5 to 2 inches (1 to 5 cm), and remove no more than a third of the blade per pass to avoid stressing the plant. Dethatch when heavy feeding allows thatch to accumulate.

Troubleshooting
Nearly every bermuda grass complaint reduces to one of a few causes: how far it spreads, when it browns, or where light fails to reach. Match your symptom below, then intervene early, before a small problem becomes a season-long correction.
Bleached circular dead patches emerging in spring
These distinct rings are spring dead spot, a fungal disease driven by Ophiosphaerella that decays the roots, rhizomes, and stolons through winter and becomes visible only as the surrounding turf greens up in spring. Left untreated, the patches expand each year and weeds move into the bare centers. Control rests on a fall fungicide program, improved drainage from dethatching and aeration, and steady potassium with pH held near 5.8 to 6.2.
Fix:
- Apply fall fungicide programs (around early to late October) alternating active ingredients
- Dethatch or verticut and core aerate to improve drainage
- Limit summer nitrogen to 1 lb per 1000 sq ft per application
- Keep potassium high and pH near 5.8-6.2
Runners pushing into beds and the lawn next door
Lateral colonization is this grass's defining strategy: it advances on surface stolons and underground rhizomes that descend roughly 18 inches (45 cm), so it travels through and under barriers rather than around them. Hand-pulling fails because every severed rhizome holds dormant buds that resprout. The reliable approach is to sink edging deep enough to intercept the runners, excavate infested soil in full, and remove escaped shoots before they anchor.
Fix:
- Install deep physical edging or bed borders to block runners
- Completely excavate infested soil, removing all rhizome fragments
- Withhold water to dry stems then repeatedly till to bring rhizomes to the surface to desiccate
- Use repeated applications of a labeled herbicide for established infestations
Brown, dormant turf when temperatures fall
Because it is a warm-season species, this grass enters protective dormancy each winter and resumes growth as soil warms, which means even, lawn-wide browning in autumn is the expected response and not a problem to correct. The genuine threat is winterkill from hard freezes, anticipated below about 10°F (-12°C), which kills crowns outright and leaves patches that will not recover. Building potassium reserves in fall improves cold hardiness, and any sections that stay dead in spring should be reseeded, sprigged, or sodded.

Sparse, declining turf in shade and under trees
This species carries very poor shade tolerance and is adapted to full sun, so its density collapses anywhere a canopy or structure intercepts the 6 or more hours of direct light it needs to photosynthesize at full capacity. The contrast is diagnostic: sunny portions of the same lawn remain thick while shaded ground thins. Either open the canopy to admit more light or convert the shaded zone to a grass or groundcover suited to lower light.

Tufted, stunted shoots with a witch's-broom form
The rosetted, witch's-broom growth is caused by the bermudagrass mite, a microscopic pest roughly 0.2 mm long that feeds concealed beneath the leaf sheath, where its damage shortens the internodes. Drought-stressed stands take the heaviest hit, so vigorous, well-irrigated turf is the primary defense. Mowing and bagging removes infested tissue from the site, and a labeled miticide is warranted only when damage becomes severe.

Toxicity
Bermuda grass is a common lawn and pasture grass that is safe for pets and people, and it does not appear on the ASPCA toxic-plant lists. The exceptions are narrow: its pollen is a major hay-fever trigger, and under drought or fungal stress the forage can become risky for grazing livestock. Neither concern applies to a maintained home lawn.

Livestock Caution
Monitor grazing cattle during drought or stress, when the plant can accumulate nitrates or prussic acid, and when a fungal infection of the seedheads can produce staggers marked by muscle tremors and an unsteady gait. A maintained lawn presents none of these hazards.

For grazing livestock there are conditional risks - under drought or stress bermudagrass can accumulate nitrates or prussic acid, and fungal (ergot/Claviceps) infection of seedheads can cause neurological bermudagrass tremors (staggers) in cattle. Bermuda grass spans a coarse seeded species and a series of finer hybrids selected for denser, finer-textured turf. The selections below are the ones you are most likely to encounter.
Common bermudagrass
The wild seeded species; coarser in leaf texture than the hybrids and the type that establishes readily from seed.

Myths
Bermuda grass will hold up as a shade lawn.
It will not. This is a full-sun species with very poor shade tolerance, so it thins and fails beneath trees or alongside buildings where light is limited. In shaded ground, establish a shade-tolerant grass instead.
