It sits in the genus Sambucus and grows wild across much of North America, favoring damp ground and field margins. Unchecked, it reaches 5 to 12 feet (1.5 to 3.7 m) and spreads to a similar width as a multi-stemmed thicket.

Few shrubs ask for so little. This one withstands cold across zones 3 through 9 and tolerates poor soil, saturated ground, and partial shade.
