Overview
The cobra lily, Darlingtonia californica, is a carnivorous pitcher plant in the family Sarraceniaceae and the only species in its genus. It grows wild in the cold mountain bogs and seeps of northern California and Oregon. Despite the name it is not a true lily; each leaf forms a hooded pitcher that rears up like a striking snake, with a forked tongue-like flap below a translucent dome.
The trap works on light. Insects move toward the bright patches inside the hood, lose track of the exit, and slide down into the digestive pool below. Because the bog soil holds almost no nutrients, the plant compensates by catching and digesting its own prey rather than drawing minerals from the ground.
What makes it demanding is the habitat it evolved for. In the wild, cold snowmelt runs constantly over its roots while the foliage stands in open sun, giving it a hot top and a cold bottom at the same time. That split is the whole game, and it is exactly why the plant defeats growers who treat it like a normal potted ornamental.
Care
The short version: give the cobra lily a hot hood and cold roots at the same time, full sun on the foliage paired with cool, constantly wet bog mix at the base. Water only with distilled, reverse-osmosis, or rainwater, never fertilize, and keep warm standing water away from the crown, because overheated roots are the single most common cause of death.
Light
Give the cobra lily full sun, which is what draws out the deep red veining in the hood; it will tolerate partial sun or light shade but turns pale and floppy when grown too dim. Strong light is only half the equation. It must be paired with a cool root zone, never a hot dry spot, because this plant evolved with sun on its foliage and cold water at its base.
Water
