Japanese pieris, widely known as andromeda, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub in the Ericaceae family, the same group that holds rhododendrons and azaleas. Its season opens in early spring, when long, pendent clusters of white urn-shaped flowers hang like miniature lily-of-the-valley bells. The glossy foliage persists year-round, and the new growth emerges a striking bronze-red before deepening to dark green.
