The defining trait of the modern shrub rose is durability under stress. Flowering in shrub roses is light-driven, so full sun, six or more hours daily, yields the heaviest bloom. They tolerate part sun and light afternoon shade, but reduced light both lowers flower count and slows the leaf-drying that keeps fungal disease in check.
Water
Water deeply at the base in the morning, since wetting only the root zone and allowing quick foliar drying denies black spot the moisture it needs. Deformed red shoots and abnormal thorn proliferation
This is rose rosette virus, an incurable infection once established in the plant. The rose leaf curl mite introduces it, after which growth turns into clustered red shoots, excessive prickles, and broom-like distortion that does not regenerate. Excavate the entire plant including its roots, remove any wild multiflora roses serving as reservoirs, and space plantings so the wind-carried mite cannot move between them.

Black lesions haloed in yellow, then defoliation
These lesions are black spot, caused by the fungus that most often afflicts roses, and it advances fastest in warm, wet conditions that keep leaves damp. Infected tissue yellows and drops, and heavy infection can defoliate a plant by late summer. Strip the affected leaves, clear fallen inoculum from the soil, and confine watering to the base in the morning so foliage dries before spores can germinate.

The coating is powdery mildew, a fungus that colonizes young leaves, shoots, and buds and distorts them as its mycelium spreads. It is favored by warm daytime temperatures of 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) paired with humid nights, and shaded, congested plantings sustain the worst infections. Relocate roses to full sun with open spacing, keep foliage dry, and excise the most heavily coated shoots.

Myths
Roses are toxic to dogs and cats.
The record does not support that. The ASPCA classifies true roses as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, so ingestion of foliage carries no poisoning risk. The genuine hazard is purely mechanical, the prickles, which can lacerate skin, mouths, and paws. Confusion arises from unrelated species that share the common name, since a desert rose or a Christmas rose is a botanically distinct plant and can indeed be toxic.
