Overview
A climbing rose converts a bare fence or arbor into a sheet of flower, but it is not a true climber in the botanical sense. The long, stiff canes carry no gripping structures of their own, so the gardener supplies the attachment by tying them to a support and directing their path. Given that framework, the plant will extend 6 to 15 feet (1.8 to 4.5 m) along a wall over several seasons.
The single most useful distinction is flowering habit. Some climbers flower once, in a concentrated flush in late spring to early summer, while others repeat from June through fall. That habit dictates pruning timing, because cutting against the plant's cycle removes the wood that would have carried the season's bloom.
Roses are often called difficult, yet most of their disorders are environmental and preventable. Site the plant in full sun, keep the foliage dry, and leave space for air to circulate between the canes, and the conditions that favor black spot and powdery mildew never establish. The thorns remain a constant mechanical hazard, so gloves and long sleeves belong to the work.

A grayish-white bloom on the youngest tissue indicates powdery mildew, a fungus that thrives under mild night temperatures, around 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C), and in the shade where humidity lingers. Prune out the most heavily colonized shoots and clear dead leaves that harbor inoculum. Sulfur sprays suppress it, but since the pathogen depends on shaded, stagnant conditions, a sunny, open position with moving air removes the very environment it requires.

Soft-bodied colonies massing on new shoots and buds

Botanically, a climbing rose lacks tendrils and holdfasts, the very structures a true climbing plant uses, so it can neither twine nor adhere on its own. The long, stiff canes are instead tied to a trellis or fence and positioned by hand. Without your ties, the canes simply flop.
Every climbing rose should get the same hard prune at the same time each year.
