Overview
Echinopsis pachanoi is a tall, columnar cactus native to the Andean slopes of Ecuador and Peru, where it grows on rocky mountain terrain. That origin explains its needs indoors: it holds up as a low-maintenance specimen that sends up ribbed green columns well past head height, provided the light is strong and the roots stay dry between waterings.
Unlike a slow desert cactus, this species grows fast. In full sun and warmth its stems add measurable height each season, and once mature it produces large, fragrant white flowers that open at night in summer. The clones in wide circulation, notably the cultivar labeled 'PC', are selected for especially rapid growth.
The tissue contains mescaline and related alkaloids, the compounds behind its long record in traditional Andean use and the reason the law regulates it. Cultivating it as an ornamental is permitted in most jurisdictions, but the flesh is not edible. Keep it as a display plant rather than a plant to ingest.
Care
The short version: supply the strongest direct sun available, a gritty mix that drains fast, and a thorough soak only after the substrate has dried through completely. Hold it warm, taper watering sharply in winter, and it needs little further input.
Light
Site it in full sun, ideally the brightest window available, because strong light keeps the stem tissue dense and upright. In bright indirect light or partial sun it survives, but the new growth thins and elongates as it reaches for photons. Indoors, a grow light run for 14 to 16 hours a day supplies enough intensity to prevent that stretching.
Water
Irrigate thoroughly so water exits the drainage holes, then withhold it until the mix reads completely dry, which in the growing season falls at roughly every 10 to 21 days. In winter the plant slows, so keep it nearly dry and water only occasionally. Excess water around the roots is the direct cause of rot and the leading way this species is lost.
Soil
Grow it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix, for instance one part potting soil to one part coarse sand, which keeps air around the roots. A pH between 6.0 and 7.5 suits it. The mechanism that matters is drainage: water must pass straight through rather than pool at the root zone.
Temperature
It performs across a broad thermal range, from 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C). Warmth drives the rapid summer growth by sustaining active metabolism, while cold combined with moisture invites rot, so move it in or keep it dry before temperatures drop.
Humidity
Low humidity matches its arid origin, in the band of 10% to 40%. Ordinary dry indoor air is sufficient, and there is no need to mist, since added moisture works against a plant adapted to dry conditions.
Feeding
Fertilize sparingly from late spring through summer with a phosphorus-rich houseplant fertilizer at half strength, once or twice over the season. Keeping the dose low matters because surplus nitrogen forces soft, weak tissue that stretches and etiolates.
Pruning
Routine pruning is unnecessary for this cactus. Intervene only to excise damaged or rotting segments, cutting with a clean blade and letting the wound callus before it contacts moisture, since an open, wet cut is the entry point for the pathogens that cause rot.
Repotting
Repot every 2 to 4 years, or earlier if roots emerge from the drainage holes, the plant turns top-heavy, or the mix dries unusually fast, all signs the roots have filled the pot. Move it into dry gritty mix and delay watering for a week so any severed roots can callus rather than rot.

Over many years it reaches 6.5 to 19.5 feet (2 to 6 m) in height and spreads 1 to 6 feet (30 to 180 cm) as it branches and offsets. Because the tall columns become heavy at the top, a mature specimen needs room and a stable, weighted pot to stay upright.

Soft, mushy stem tissue discoloring to brown or black
This presents as rot, and it originates almost entirely from water held around the roots. Cold, saturated mix allows fungi and bacteria to enter through any minor wound, after which the softened tissue advances along the stem. Excise back to firm green flesh with a sterile blade, allow the cut to callus, then re-root the sound upper portion in dry, gritty mix.
Fix:
- Cut away all soft and discolored tissue back to firm green flesh with a sterile blade
- Let the cut surface callus in a dry, airy, shaded spot for 1-2 weeks
- Re-root the healthy upper section in dry, gritty mix

Pale, narrow new growth elongating toward the light
This is etiolation, a light-deficiency response in which the plant extends toward whatever light it can reach. The new tissue emerges thin and pale against the older ribbed sections and angles toward the brightest source in the room. Relocate it to full sun, but acclimate it over a couple of weeks to prevent scorch, and reduce feeding while it firms up.

This is sunburn, the result of a shade-grown plant meeting intense direct sun without a transition period. Move it to a bright but lightly shaded position, then reintroduce full sun by degrees over two to three weeks.

Cats Caution
Although the ASPCA does not classify the genus as orally toxic, the flesh contains mescaline and related alkaloids, so a cat that chews it may drool, vomit, or become jittery and disoriented. The more immediate risk is mechanical: the sharp spines puncture a curious mouth or paw with ease. Position it out of reach.
Dogs Caution
A dog that gnaws a stem ingests the same alkaloids and can develop gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, or unsteady, disoriented behavior. The stiff spines additionally lacerate the mouth and gums. Most dogs avoid it, but a determined chewer warrants supervision.
Horses Caution
No documented equine poisonings exist, yet the mescaline-bearing flesh would disturb the gut and could leave a horse dull or unsteady after a sufficient dose. The spines alone make it unsuitable near a paddock.
Rabbits Caution
Given a rabbit's small size, even a modest amount of the alkaloid-rich flesh could provoke digestive disturbance and sluggish, abnormal behavior, so it is not a safe browse. Keep the container well away from any free-roaming animal.
Livestock Caution
Grazing species such as goats, sheep, and cattle may ingest the alkaloids along with the flesh and show gastrointestinal upset or dull, uncoordinated behavior. Fence the plant off from any area stock can access.
Birds Caution
Documentation for birds is sparse, but the same alkaloids that affect mammals make a pecked stem inadvisable, and the spines can injure a probing beak. Treat it as off-limits for pet birds.

Varieties
The bulk of cultivated San Pedro is the unmodified species, though a small number of named forms circulate among collectors. Two are worth identifying.
'Monstrose' (San Pedro Monstrose)
A genetic mutation produces lumpy, knobby, irregular growth with few or no spines, which is why it is cultivated strictly as an ornamental novelty.
'PC' (Predominant Cultivar)
As the most widely circulated clone in the US, it is valued for vigorous, rapid growth and short spines.

Myths
San Pedro and peyote are the same cactus.
They are distinct species. Peyote is the small, button-shaped Lophophora williamsii, while San Pedro is the tall, columnar Echinopsis pachanoi. Each contains mescaline, but the two are not the same plant.
Cultivating a San Pedro cactus is by itself illegal in the US.
Maintaining the living plant as an ornamental is lawful in most US states. The offense is extracting or preparing mescaline from it, which falls under Schedule I of the controlled-substance law, and a limited number of jurisdictions impose additional restrictions.
