Overview
The oriental poppy is a hardy herbaceous perennial cultivated chiefly for its enormous, crepe-paper flowers in scarlet, orange, plum, and crimson, which open in late spring. An individual bloom persists only a few days, yet a clump in full flower reads as one of the boldest displays a border can hold. Its persistence rests on a deep, fleshy taproot that returns growth year after year and carries the crown through winters as cold as -40°F (-40°C).
One trait deserves attention before siting the plant. Following anthesis the entire plant enters summer dormancy, the foliage yellows and dies back, and the position stays vacant until fresh growth resumes in fall. That vacancy is a normal phase of the cycle rather than a symptom, and it should govern both placement and the choice of neighboring plants.
The species demands sun and drainage and little else. Once a clump has established, its taproot confers real drought tolerance, and it responds poorly to excess attention, above all to overwatering. Sited correctly and left undisturbed, it will outlast most neighboring perennials.
Care
The short version: full sun with sharp, well-drained soil, irrigated only after the top half has dried. Apply a light spring feed, anticipate midsummer dormancy, and otherwise leave the deep taproot undisturbed.

Site an oriental poppy in full sun for optimal flowering, though it will accept light partial shade. Greater direct light produces sturdier flower stems and a heavier display, since photosynthate drives both structure and bloom.

Let the top half of the soil dry between waterings, which in practice means irrigating only every 7 to 14 days. An established plant tolerates drought well, whereas saturated ground is the quickest route to taproot rot. Through summer dormancy its water demand falls to almost nothing.

Plant into well-drained loam or sandy soil, since drainage governs success here far more than fertility. The species accepts a broad pH range from 6.0 to 8.0, but a heavy, waterlogged site will defeat it.

Given its toughness, the oriental poppy presents few problems, and most reduce to one of two causes: soil that retains excess water, or the natural midsummer dieback that unfamiliar growers misread as decline. Identify the pattern below before applying any remedy.
Crown blackening, wilt, and progressive collapse of the clump
A blackened, collapsing crown is the classic signature of root rot, and in this species it traces almost always to soil that holds water around the fleshy taproot. Because that thick, storage root cannot respire in saturated ground, it breaks down into the mushy, dark, foul-smelling tissue you find on digging. Correct it by reducing irrigation, opening the drainage with sand or grit, and if the site stays wet, relocating the crown to a raised, free-draining bed.

Regard this as a poisonous plant throughout. Cats Toxic
In a cat that ingests leaf tissue or sap, the alkaloids depress the nervous system, producing sedation, an unsteady gait, inappetence, and gastrointestinal upset. At very large doses that depression can deepen into a coma-like, hard-to-rouse sleep.
Dogs Toxic
A dog shows the same alkaloid effect as sedation, ataxia, drooling, and a refused meal, because the compounds in the sap act directly on the central nervous system. A large ingestion can therefore leave a dog dangerously sluggish and warrants veterinary attention.
Horses Toxic
A horse that grazes the foliage or trimmings tends toward drowsiness, dullness, and digestive upset as the alkaloids take effect. Exclude poppy from paddocks and keep it clear of anything they graze.
Rabbits Toxic
The alkaloids are distributed throughout the plant, so no part is safe for a rabbit. Deny access to the foliage and keep clippings out of the hutch.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, sheep, and goats respond to the foliage with sedation and general illness, the expected result of alkaloid ingestion. Fence stock away from plantings and keep trimmings out of pasture.

Because the toxic alkaloids pervade the whole plant, treat every part as unsuitable for pet birds and offer them none of it.

Varieties
The oriental poppies in commerce are largely named cultivars selected for flower color and stature. The following are the selections most often encountered.
Beauty of Livermere
A taller selection at 2 to 3 feet bearing deep crimson-red flowers, and because it self-seeds readily it can also be raised from seed.
Patty's Plum
Distinguished by its dusky plum-mauve flowers borne on stems around 2 to 2.5 feet tall.
Allegro
A compact cultivar at 1 to 1.5 feet whose bright orange-scarlet flowers suit a border front.
Turkenlouis
Notable for fringed, feathered scarlet-orange petals carried on stems 2 to 3 feet tall.
