Overview

Old garden roses are the heritage classes introduced before 1867, the gallicas, damasks, albas, and related groups cultivated long before the modern hybrids. As a group they are hardier and more forgiving than contemporary florist roses, and many carry enough disease resistance to stay off the spray schedule that newer types demand. Their fragrance is as much the point as the flower.

The classes divide into two functional groups defined by where they set flower buds, and that distinction governs the whole pruning approach. The once-blooming roses, gallica, damask, alba, centifolia, and moss, bear their single early-summer flush on old wood carried over from the previous season. The repeat-bloomers, including bourbon, Portland, China, tea, and noisette, flower on current-season growth and rebloom through the season, which is why the timing and severity of the cut differ between the two.

These are durable shrubs that demand less than their reputation implies. Given adequate sun, a decent free-draining soil, and air movement through the canopy, most establish and grow on their own roots for decades. The principal caution is the thorns.

Care

Light

Old garden roses perform best in full sun, and morning exposure is preferable because it evaporates the overnight dew early and shortens the leaf-wetness period that fungi require. They tolerate light partial shade, but bloom declines and disease pressure rises when the canes remain damp. Provide 6 to 8 hours of direct sun.

Water

Water deeply in the morning so the canopy dries quickly, which denies black spot and powdery mildew the sustained leaf wetness they need to infect. A thorough soak every 5 to 7 days suits most plants, with a shorter interval in heat or on sandy ground. Avoid evening overhead watering, which leaves foliage wet through the night.

Soil

Grow them in loose, well-drained soil amended with ample organic matter, which supplies both aeration and moisture-holding structure. A pH of 6.0 and 7.0, slightly acidic to neutral, keeps nutrients available. Heavy, waterlogged ground is the one condition roses will not tolerate.

Temperature

Most rose disorders present on the foliage first, and prolonged leaf wetness in a crowded canopy underlies nearly all of them. Detect the early signs and a prompt sanitation usually contains the problem. Match the symptom below, then intervene before the disorder advances up the plant.

Setback

Feathery dark lesions and yellowing across the upper leaves

These lesions are black spot, caused by the fungus Diplocarpon rosae, which needs a film of water on the leaf for more than about 7 hours to germinate and infect. Because the spores move by splash, the disease establishes on the lowest foliage and advances upward, defoliating as it climbs. Remove the infected leaves, clear the fallen litter that harbors overwintering spores, and confine watering to the base in the morning so the canopy dries before the wetness threshold is reached.

Because it colonizes soft, actively expanding tissue, the new growth distorts and the affected leaves yellow, then brown. Excise the worst shoots, thin the canopy to lower humidity and let air move, and withhold excess nitrogen, since the lush growth it drives is exactly what the pathogen exploits.

  • Prune out and dispose of heavily infected shoots and leaves

Colonies of small sap-feeding insects and honeydew on tender growth

The dense green, pink, or black colonies on the succulent tips are aphids, and the sticky residue below them is honeydew excreted as they feed. They concentrate on soft new growth and buds, but the damage is largely cosmetic and rarely lasting. Dislodge them with a firm morning jet of water, and preserve the lady beetles and lacewings that suppress them by avoiding the broad-spectrum insecticides that would kill those predators alongside the pest.
