Mustard is a fast, easy annual brassica cultivated along two very different lines. In the vegetable garden it yields a peppery leaf crop and the seed pressed or ground for condiment, both harvestable within weeks of sowing. In the field it ranks among the most effective biofumigant cover crops, incorporated green to suppress soilborne problems ahead of the following crop.

It germinates in cool weather and moves rapidly to flower, producing the bright yellow four-petaled blooms typical of the family in spring or fall. Two species account for most use. Brown mustard, Brassica juncea, carries the highest concentration of the glucosinolates that drive biofumigation, while white mustard, Sinapis alba, supplies much of the condiment seed and suppresses weeds strongly in its own right.

Its chief liability is prolific reseeding. Permitted to flower and pod, it disperses seed and returns as a weedy volunteer, so the governing principle in managing mustard is terminating it at early flowering, before it can replenish the seedbank.

Toxicity

The single qualifier is dose, since the isothiocyanate chemistry that gives mustard its heat can mildly irritate the gut when any animal ingests large amounts of the raw leaf or seed.

Cats Safe

Varieties

The mustard offered for garden and field resolves into a few species and named cover-crop blends. These are the ones worth distinguishing.

Brassica juncea (brown / Indian / oriental mustard)
