Yes, soil color indicate quality to some degree but not the full story. Color gives you clues about organic matter and drainage. Dark soils often hold more organic material. Red soils drain well. All that dark color came from old leaves, not from good fertility. You can't judge the bank account by the wallet's color.

Color is just one piece of a three-part puzzle. Physical, chemical, and biological markers all have to line up before you can call your soil healthy. Skipping any one of those three groups leaves gaps in what you know.
Grab a free Munsell color chart online to note your soil's shade each season. Write down the color when the soil is moist since dry soil looks lighter. Then pair that note with a lab test to see if the color matches what the chemistry says. I document my beds this way every fall. It takes five minutes and helps me spot changes over time. A shift from dark brown to lighter tan might mean organic matter is dropping. A shift toward gray might mean drainage is getting worse. Use color as your first clue, then let the lab confirm the rest.
