- Health risk: Plants can absorb lead and cadmium into their leaves and fruit without showing any visible stress.

Soil deficiency detection works through a simple index system on most extension lab reports. A nutrient index below 25 means that element is deficient in your soil. Scores of 26 to 50 fall in the medium range. Anything above 50 means you have enough. Check each nutrient against these ranges before you buy a single bag of fertilizer. Excess sodium from irrigation water is another issue the test catches. Most gardeners overlook salt buildup until their plants start to wilt.
If you garden in an urban spot or near a busy road then ask for a heavy metal screen. The standard extension test won't cover lead or cadmium unless you request it.
