Your first step after soil test results arrive is to look at the pH number before anything else. pH controls how well your plants can grab every other nutrient on the report. If pH is off, fixing the other numbers won't matter much. Correct pH first and some of those low readings may fix themselves without you spending a dime on extra fertilizer.

Compare each nutrient on your report to these ranges before you buy anything. A score of 22 for potassium means you need to add some. A score of 65 for calcium means you're fine and can skip it. Don't treat every low number the same way though. Fix pH first, then tackle any nutrient that falls below 25. After those big fixes, deal with anything in the medium range if your plants still seem to need help.
Your soil test next steps should follow a clear order. First, correct pH with lime or sulfur based on what the report says. Second, address any major nutrient gaps that scored below 25. Third, make smaller tweaks to medium-range nutrients if your crops demand them. Write this list down and pin it to your garden shed wall. Calculate how much of each product you need using the report's own dosing chart. Most extension reports tell you exactly how many pounds per 1,000 square feet to apply.
Mark your calendar to retest based on your soil type. Sandy soils need a check in 2 to 3 years. Clay soils can wait 3 to 4 years. If you made big pH changes, retest in 6 months to see where things landed. I keep a folder for all my soil reports so I can track trends over time. That history tells me if my garden is getting better or sliding backward. A simple plan turns a confusing lab report into a clear to-do list for your garden.
