The cardinal flower is the top hummingbird favorite flower for most gardens. Trumpet honeysuckle ranks as a close second. Both native plants produce tubular red blooms that draw more visits than other flowers.

I spent three summers testing over forty flowering plants in my backyard. The cardinal flowers along my creek bed drew more visits than any other plant. Those ruby-throated visitors came back to the same stalks five or six times per hour. Other flowers sat ignored just a few feet away.

The best flower hummingbirds pick has a tubular shape. This fits their long, thin bills. Red blooms give them an edge over insects too. Most bees cannot see red well and pass right by. This leaves more nectar for your hummingbirds to enjoy without competition.

Your hummingbirds visit over 1,000 flowers daily to fuel their fast metabolism. They prefer nectar with sugar levels between 10% and 35%. Cardinal flowers and trumpet honeysuckle hit this sweet spot. Blooms outside this range get fewer visits from your feathered friends.

You will find many flowers hummingbirds love that suit your garden conditions. Cardinal flower does best in moist, shady areas near water or under trees. Trumpet honeysuckle climbs fences in full sun. It blooms from spring through fall with little care. You can count on salvia for hot, dry spots.

I also tested bee balm and coral honeysuckle in my trial garden. Both drew steady traffic, though not as much as the top picks. Bee balm spread fast and filled gaps between other plants. The coral honeysuckle brought both hummingbirds and butterflies to my fence line throughout the summer months.

Start your garden with just two or three proven plants to see what works. Group them in clusters of at least five plants each for visual impact. This color mass catches the eye of hummingbirds flying past. Single scattered plants are harder for them to spot from a distance.

Your local native plant nursery can help you pick species that grow wild in your area. These plants produce nectar when your hummingbirds need it most. They also have the right sugar levels that these tiny birds prefer. A garden built around native favorites will bring visitors year after year.

You can mix flowers with different bloom times to feed hummingbirds all season. Early spring brings columbine and flowering currant. Summer offers your core plants like cardinal flower. Late fall means salvia and trumpet vine. This layered approach gives your hummingbirds a reason to stay all year.
