How many spears can one plant yield?

A single mature asparagus plant yield comes to about 20-25 spears per season. In terms of weight, that means 0.5-0.75 pounds (225-340 g) from each crown in your bed. These numbers apply to healthy crowns that have reached full production around year four or later.

Your asparagus spears per plant count will vary based on several factors. Crown age matters most since young plants make fewer spears than older ones. Weather also plays a role. A warm spring with steady temps pushes up more spears than a cold, wet one.

I tracked my yields for five years across two different beds in my garden. My older bed with Jersey Knight crowns hit peak production at year seven. That year I pulled nearly 30 spears from each crown. My newer bed with mixed heirloom types peaked lower at around 18 spears per crown.

Your asparagus harvest amount grows each year until the plants mature. Year two gives you maybe 5-8 spears per crown if you harvest at all. Year three bumps that up to 12-15 spears. By years five through eight, you hit the sweet spot of 20-25 spears from each crown.

All-male hybrid varieties produce 3-4 times more than older heirloom types like Mary Washington. The difference comes down to energy use. Female plants waste energy making seeds while male plants put all their power into growing spears. For maximum yield, stick with all-male hybrids like Jersey Giant or Millennium.

UMD Extension data shows you can expect about 3-4 pounds (1.4-1.8 kg) from a 10-foot (3 m) row of asparagus. If you plant 25 crowns spaced properly, you should harvest around 20 pounds (9 kg) of spears each year once the bed matures. That's enough to feed a family of four through spring with plenty left to freeze.

Your asparagus production rate depends on how well you care for the plants. Feed your bed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring before spears emerge. Give it another dose right after you finish harvesting. This post-harvest feeding helps crowns rebuild energy stores for next year.

Water makes a big difference in how many spears you get. Your asparagus needs about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water each week during the growing season. Dry conditions cause thin, tough spears and lower total yields. Mulch your bed to hold moisture in the soil.

Pick the right variety for your climate to boost yields even higher. Jersey Knight handles cold winters well. UC 157 thrives in warm climates. Match your variety to your zone and you'll see better results than if you just grab whatever crowns the nursery has on sale.

Don't expect these top yields from a neglected bed. Weeds steal nutrients and water from your crowns. Pests like asparagus beetle damage ferns and reduce next year's harvest. Stay on top of basic care and your plants will reward you with fat spears for decades to come.
