Can earthworms be a guaranteed sign of healthy soil?

No, earthworms sign healthy soil in terms of biology but they don't promise balanced chemistry or good nutrient levels. Worms tell you the soil has decent organic matter and oxygen. That's a great start. But worms live just fine in soil that's too acidic or too low in key nutrients for your plants. You need a chemical test to fill in the gaps that worms can't tell you about.

I dug into one of my garden beds last spring and counted 15 earthworms in a single cubic foot of topsoil. That number made me feel good about the bed's health. Then I got the lab results back and the picture changed fast. The pH sat at 5.0 which is too acidic for most veggies. Phosphorus came back at an index of 12 which means deficient. The worms were happy down there. My tomato plants were not. That experience taught me to never trust worms alone as my soil health report card.

The USDA NRCS lists earthworm abundance as one earthworm soil indicator in their soil health framework. But that framework has three parts: physical, chemical, and biological. Biological markers like worm counts make up less than 20% of a full assessment. Chemical readings like pH, phosphorus, and potassium carry the largest share of the score. Worms give you one piece of useful data. The chemical test gives you the rest. You need both to see the whole picture.

Knowing the right benchmarks helps when you do your own earthworm count garden check. Here's how to read the numbers and do the count the right way.

Healthy Baseline Count

  • Minimum target: Find at least 10 worms per cubic foot of topsoil to confirm decent biological activity.
  • Good range: Counts of 20 to 30 worms per cubic foot point to strong organic matter and active soil life.
  • Low counts: Fewer than 5 worms may signal poor organic matter, compaction, or recent chemical use.

Proper Counting Conditions

  • Soil temperature: Only count when the ground is above 50 to 55°F (10 to 13°C) since worms go deeper in cold soil.
  • Time of day: Morning hours work best because soil moisture stays higher before the sun dries things out.
  • Depth: Dig a full cubic foot down about 12 inches and sort through the soil by hand or on a tarp.

What Worms Can't Tell You

  • pH level: Worms tolerate a wide pH range so their presence doesn't confirm your soil is in the sweet spot.
  • Nutrient balance: Worms thrive in soil that lacks phosphorus, potassium, or calcium for your crops.
  • Contamination: Worms live in soils with moderate lead or heavy metal levels that pose risks for edible plants.

The smart move is to pair your worm count with a lab test every time. I count worms each spring when I turn my beds. If I see plenty of worms but my plants still struggle, I know the chemistry needs checking. If I see few worms but the lab says pH and nutrients look fine, I focus on adding more compost to feed the biology. Each check covers a blind spot the other one misses.

Don't skip pH and nutrient testing just because you see worms in your soil. Worms coexist with many problems that hurt plants. A $12 lab test gives you the numbers that worms can't. Use both tools and your garden will show the results. The worm count takes five minutes and the lab test takes a week. Together they give you the most complete view of what's going on under your plants' roots.
