Is it okay to grow macadamia trees from store-bought nuts?

No, you cannot grow macadamia from store-bought nuts in most cases you try at home. The nuts you buy at stores have been dried and processed in ways that kill the seed inside. This makes them unable to sprout even if you plant them the right way in good soil.

When I first got into growing these trees, I tried planting macadamia nuts from a bag I bought at the local store. I soaked them, planted them in good soil, and waited for months with no results at all. The seeds were dead before I even started due to the drying process.

Commercial macadamia nuts get heat dried at 95°F to 110°F after harvest to reduce moisture for storage. This heat kills the embryo inside the seed and ends any chance of macadamia seed germination. Roasted nuts are even worse since the high heat destroys all life in the seed.

Even if you found a viable store nut that could sprout, growing macadamia from seed takes much longer than other methods. Seedling trees need 10 to 15 years to produce their first nuts on average. Grafted trees give you nuts in just 5 to 7 years with known variety traits.

Planting macadamia nuts that come fresh from a tree works much better than store bought options for growing. You need unhusked nuts picked straight from the ground under a mature tree. These fresh nuts keep their ability to sprout if you plant them within a few weeks of harvest.

If you want to try growing from seed, look for fresh nuts from local growers or online seed sources. Keep the nuts in their shells and plant them sideways about an inch deep in good potting mix. Keep the soil moist but not wet while you wait for sprouts to show up.

I now tell new growers to skip the seed route and buy grafted nursery stock instead of trying seeds. You pay more up front but save years of waiting for your first harvest. Grafted trees also give you a known variety with predictable nut quality and production each year.

Your best path to homegrown macadamias runs through a good local nursery that sells grafted trees ready to plant. Ask about the variety and rootstock before you buy one to take home. This choice will serve you much better than trying to grow macadamia from seed over the long run.
